The technique most often overlooked is playing what you hear in your head.

This post is about learning how to improvise on guitar. Learning to “speak” the language of music using the guitar.

For some, knowing how to improvise on guitar is the holy grail of learning guitar. It’s the reason they play it.

The weird thing is, it’s simple to learn. The process is only a few steps. Repeat those steps over time, and you’ll be coming up with new solos daily without even thinking about it.

Now, this doesn’t mean it’s EASY. Hell no. It’s hard because you have to do these steps A LOT, over time. It’s just like learning anything. You gotta do it a lot for your brain to “figure it out”, after tons of trial and error.

I found a great video that describes how to get started today:

The only thing I would add is…

You’re gonna have a lot of melodies pop up in your head throughout the day. That’s a good thing. Don’t let it go to waste. When a melody pops up, take it and try to play it on your guitar.

Yes, you will screw it up a few times. But the more you do this, the better you’ll get at being able to play whatever is in your head when it’s time to improvise that crazy solo on stage. Makes sense no?
